After a devastating car accident, Nick whispers his last words to his wife, Mackenzie: “As soon as they know I’m dead, they’ll come after you.”
Frightened and bewildered, Mackenzie travels to Philadelphia for the reading of her late husband’s will. To her shock, she learns that Nick’s mother, Cora, is not dead as he always claimed—rather, she is living as a recluse in the family’s gloomy nineteenth-century mansion. Desperate to understand why her husband lied to her for so many years, Mackenzie accepts Cora’s invitation to stay as her guest.
As the women come together in the same house, their stories entwine, each driven by an agenda. Cora clings to her memories and will do anything to protect her family’s secrets, while Mackenzie struggles to uncover a terrible truth long denied. But as she brings to light the darkness in her husband’s past, is Mackenzie putting her own future at risk?

When I first read the synopsis, I was intrigued. When I started reading the first few chapters, it (kind of) grabbed my attention. Yet as I read further, my interested started to dwindle.
I grabbed this book because of its intriguing synopsis and my interest for mystery. The mystery aspect of The Book of James was really nice. In fact, it was the only thing about this book that kept me reading. It really kept me thinking about what the heck was up. It had an interesting twist and turns of events. When I thought everything was finally revealed, it actually had kept one more thing hidden in its sleeves which I liked. What stopped me from liking this book, on the other hand, is the story, the issue this book tackles - money, inheritance, REVENGE. It disturbed me how the whole revenge was planned and done and ruined lives. This also involved romance which I kind of didn't like as well because of how quickly their relationship escalated. When romance scenes come up I start screaming (mentally): OH GOD! YOUR HUSBAND JUST DIED!! LIKE A MONTH OR TWO AGO!!
Anyway, The Book of James is honestly a decent mystery novel. If you're up for a suspenseful mystery, this is definitely a nice read. Yet I'd like to mention that really annoying issue at hand - how this is all about money and revenge (and slightly being crazy).

Quick read. Beautifully written. Kept me thinking.
When I read the synopsis of Mama Cried, I was curious. A heartbreaking story came swirling in my mind. I read a couple of reviews and they were good. They caught my attention. It made me want to give this a shot.
In such a short story, twelve pages long, Haven was able to weave such a good story that really matters. In such a short story, she was able to tell a story that would make you feel for the heroine, Jenny. Mama Cried kept me reading straight - it's a quick read, it's a story that would make you want to consume it in one go (not because it's short but because it's good). It's a story with a dash of innocence. It's a story that made me feel sad. It made me feel like hugging Jenny. It's a story worth reading.
